Conquer the most beautiful river scenery of the western Lapland
The fell line from Ylläs to up north divides the waterways of western Lapland to those runing to west towards Muonio river - the border river between Sweden and Finland – and those runing to east towards Ounas river. Both of these main waterways of Lapland outlet rivers were dredged up after the last war for logging reasons.
When the logging ended about 30 years ago, the rocks were lifted back in the rivers for the fish to hide around, but in most rivers there were passages left for the canoes to pass by. There are no real rough rapids or falls in the rivers, thus making them quite easy to pass. A safety measure concerning a canoeist is the narrowness of the rivers.
Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi are good bases from where to start conquering the rivers of the western Lapland. People who know the basics of canoeing and being out on the water in general can easily go along on the rivers. In the beginning of the summer, when the melting waters from the fells run to these rivers there is quite fast riding available even in the class II rivers, but toward the end of the summer, the trip might just stop to the rocks or sand banks. Please, still always use caution around the rivers.
Besides common sense, one always needs proper equipment on a canoe trip. We provide good, CE- approved and environmental conditions suited kayaks and canoes and other equipment needed. The basic rent always includes life jackets, paddles, a waterproof sack, a map and good advice. For an additional price, we pack up all the other needed camping and fishing equipment and fishing permits too.
The transportation of the equipment you can arrange yourself, or let us to do it. The canoes and kayaks are easily transported on the roof racks, any bigger equipment is handled by a trailer.
